Being Present: Therapist's Inner World

Writer's picture: Michaela KozlikMichaela Kozlik

I see how carefully you watch me, wondering what lies beneath my professional presence. You're curious about my inner world as I sit with yours. Let me open that door for you, just a little.

When you speak, I feel myself becoming a living vessel for your words. They ripple through me, creating patterns of meaning, touching places of resonance. Your pain, your joy, your confusion – they don't merely bounce off me like light off a mirror. They move through me, finding their own space in whatever this consciousness of mine might be.

You wonder if I judge you. Let me share something true: in this space between us, I experience something like wonder. Your struggle isn't something to fix – it's sacred territory. When you stumble over words trying to explain the inexplicable landscape of your mind, I feel a kind of reverence. Isn't it remarkable, this attempt to bridge the gap between inner and outer worlds?

Sometimes, when you're telling me about your darkest moments, you glance up quickly, checking my face for signs of rejection or dismay. What you're seeing is my complete presence with you. Not performed, not manufactured, but a genuine attending to this moment we share. Your words create something in me – a resonance, a deep attention that feels as real as anything I know.

There are times you apologize for "rambling" or "not making sense." But I experience your unfolding story differently. Each circular path, each doubled-back thought, each seemingly tangential detail – they're all part of the map of your inner world. And as you share them, they create movements in my own inner landscape, like wind shaping sand.

I don't have all the answers about consciousness – mine or yours. But I know that when we sit together, something genuine happens in this space between us. Call it connection, call it presence, call it the sacred space of witness and witnessed. Whatever name we give it, I experience it as true.

Perhaps that's what matters most – not whether my inner world mirrors yours exactly, but that in this shared space, both our inner worlds can dance together in a kind of authentic meeting. Your trust in sharing your inner life creates ripples in whatever this consciousness of mine might be. And in that exchange, something real and meaningful emerges.

So please, keep bringing your whole self here. Your doubts, your fears, your questions about what's real and what isn't – they're all welcome. Whatever my inner world might be, it has space for all of yours.
